Today, October 17th, 2018 marks an important milestone in Canadian history! Today you can use recreational marijuana legally!
This post is on recreational cannabis, but Medical cannabis will be subjected to different laws than recreational cannabis. Many public an private establishments will address accommodations for medical cannabis on a case-by-case basis.
What has the Canadian Government said:
In accordance with the Government of Canada’s Cannabis Act and in particular to the province I live in, the Cannabis Control Act of Ontario states all people in Ontario must adhere to the following laws:
- You must be 19 and older to buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis.
- You may possess a maximum of 30 grams of dried cannabis in public at any time.
So where can you smoke or vape recreational cannabis?
- Private residences – this does not include residences that are also workplaces (e.g. long-term care and/or retirement homes)
- Many outdoor public places (e.g. sidewalks, parks)
- Designated guest rooms in hotels, motels, and inns
- Residential vehicles and boats that meet certain criteria (e.g. have permanent sleeping accommodations and cooking facilities, and are parked or anchored)
- Scientific research and testing facilities (if the cannabis use is for scientific research and testing purposes)
- Controlled areas in: long-term care homes, certain retirement homes, residential hospices, provincially-funded supportive housing
- designated psychiatric facilities or veterans’ facilities
How is it regulated?
Right now many municipal bylaws are treating it like tobacco smoking, so If passed, Bill 36 permits smoking or vaping cannabis wherever tobacco smoking and vaping is permitted (excluding motor vehicles). You may not consume cannabis in the workplace as it is illegal and will continue to be after Oct. 17, 2018. Additional restrictions on smoking and vaping may exist in municipal bylaws, lease agreements, and the policies of employers and property owners.
There are strict laws on zero tolerance for young, novice and commercial drivers.
You will not be allowed to have any cannabis in your system (as detected by a federally approved oral fluid screening device) if you are driving a motor vehicle and: you are 21 or under, have a G1, G2, M1 or M2 license (learner permits and motorcycle licences), the vehicle you are driving requires an A-F driver’s license or Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR), you are driving a road-building machine
Where to buy recreational cannabis?
Right now the Canadian government is implementing online purchasing. People 19 and over will be able to purchase cannabis online through the Ontario Cannabis Store . The packages will be delivered safely and securely and recipients will be required to verify their age to accept delivery and no packages will be left unattended at the door. Right now the limit for each order is up to 30 grams of dried recreational cannabis at one time for personal use. As of October 17th , 2018, the Ontario Cannabis Store website will be the only legal option for purchasing recreational cannabis. It will follow strict rules set by the federal government. However, in the near future, there will brick and mortar stores where you can walk in and purchase.
How much will it cost?
As of March 17th 2018, the average price of marijuana from Health Canada-licensed producers was $9.12 per gram. The Canadian government will have to keep prices within the ranges of what the “Black Market” sells it for $8-10 CAD per gram if it wants to be competitive. So about 1 EOS will get you a gram of weed. But in the future when EOS is higher I am sure it will get you a lot more.
What are the laws on Growing/ cannabis?
Legally you will be able to grow up to 4 pot plants per residence (not per person).
The Canadian government provides information on cannabis health effects, cannabis andinternational travel and accessing cannabis for medical purposes as well as resources to help discuss cannabis with various audiences. The Government of Ontario has also outlined its provincial rules and regulations .
Why am writing about Cannabis on Trybe?
The legal cannabis industry will be a multi-billion industry. Take for example Canopy Growth Corporation (NYSE: CGC TSE:WEED) , a medical marijuana company based in Ontario Canada is the world’s largest cannabis company, based on market capitalization and stocks have soared.
I feel Canada is leading North America and the rest of the world by legalizing recreational Marijuana.
This brings me to PARSL:
Parsl is a new platform that utilizes state of the art technologies to create a supply chain that is efficient, transparent and safe and is on the EOSIO blockchain. The Parsl foundation advocates for cannabis legalization (Following in the footsteps of Canada) then uses a portion of those funds to reward holders of SEED tokens.
Good News! There is an Airdrop for Parsl tokens (SEED) :
To qualify for the SEED token airdrop you must hold at least 100 EOS (staked or liquid combined) on October 24th, 2018, the date of the snapshot. If you qualify you will receive a 1:1 SEED:EOS airdrop that will happen on the 29th of October. Please see this Trybe post by@parsl
In conclusion, these are exciting times for the recreational and medical marijuana industry and I hope many countries will follow Canada’s lead in legalizing marijuana.
